I'm Aurélien Poncin, a 31 years old French entrepreneur in the yachting industry passionate about design and design thinking. I founded Aureus Yachts back in April 2010 to run a sailing 50 footer project, aimed at hedonists. The company gathers around 50 talents to create a new reference for luxury sailing, focused on sensations rather than traditional codes. We build each year 10 to 15 boats (Catana 42 and Aureus XV) in our factory, near La Rochelle.
The First Aureus XV absolute, “Zig Zag Wanderer” will sail across the atlantic in November joining the 2012 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, better known as the ARC.
This year’s edition will start, as always from Las Palmas, on November 25th, for a 2.600 Nautical miles navigation to Rodney Bay – Saint Lucia. http://www.worldcruising.com/arc/
It’s a perfect event to enjoy a great experience of sailing for 2 weeks across the Atlantic and reveal the full potential of the Aureus XV Absolute. The very light weight of the yacht, due to its carbon/epoxy hull and deck, carbon mast and boom, together with its D4 vectran sails should make the crossing fast and sensational.
I will join the crew to make sure we seize this amazing opportunity to improve the Aureus XV again and hopefully find out new ways to deliver wild sensations on our Compact Maxi Yacht.
260 sailing yachts, big or small, monohulls or catamarans, are engaged and the rally is an opportunity to meet other passionate people while racing in a fun spirit for around 15 days. The arrival in Saint Lucia in early December should be spectacular.
I’ll try to post regularly to share this experience.
We will also organize a few sea trials of the Aureus XV in Saint-Lucia. Feel free to contact us if you’d like to join us there for a sea-trial.
Answering a contest launched by Oregon Manifest, a non-profit that claims bikes can make the world a better place, Ideo, the famous innovation company partnered with Rock Lobster Custom Cycles (Paul Sadoff) to design and build a bike with an integrated electric hub motor, lithium-ion battery pack, and custom cycle computer for seamless electric pedal assist when desired.
The name of this amazing utility bike is Faraday, and it is already possible to pre-order it on Faraday Bicycles. It features steam-bent wood fenders and a classic leather saddle and all the electronics and electric stuff is integrated and does not affect the design of this stylish bicycle. At the time I’m writing, the price is set to 3.500$ for pre-orders.
The least I can say is that the result is…AWESOME !!! The type of utility bike that makes its owner proud for a long time and makes people want to ride bicycles again.
Both companies involved are great ! The bike looks incredible, with a timeless style and great material.
Clearly, the bike does not fit in a 50 footer like our Aureus XV, or any sailing yacht under 60′, but I simply couldn’t help but talk about it… If one day we design our own 80′ sailing yacht, then I believe two of those amazing bikes should find a nice place on board.
Wouter Strietman is graduate from the Eidhoven Design Academy and he seems to care a lot about Espresso.
He’s work is centered on “redefining the craft of Espresso making”…and his last creation, the ES2 espresso machine, sets the tone :
All parts of this machine are custom made, laser cut and CNC milled. Designed from scratch and perfected till the last detail.
The ES2 features two 250 Watt heating elements integrated in the brew group for ultimate thermal conduction and heat build up. The electrics on this machine are very basic, no PID controllers, no circuit boards.
A machine making great coffee, manufactured to last, with low electrical consumption, I think it would make a good input for a yacht.
“Building the fastest 100 ft cruiser ever”. The French naval architecture office (http://www.finot-conq.com) has been chosen to design this extraordinary, yet pretty simply stated, project.
The modern design of this very wide “Open” sailing yacht is remarkable (literally). Featuring a lifting keel, a 46m high Mast, full carbon, a square-top mainsail, this yacht will be, without any doubt a provider of strong sailing sensations. It’s described as a cruising yacht, suggesting there will be a lot of comfort and design inside.
Let’s hope we’ll see it soon under sails.
This 100 ft carbon cruiser will be built by Maxi Dolphin, in Italy.
Searching for the best folding bike to fit in the Aureus XV, the Compact Maxi Yacht for hedonists, I went through the Strida’s website and discovered their limited edition of the Strida 5.0, the Strida 5.0 SX Limited.
No more searching, I found the good one. This folding bike looks great in its limited (collector) edition, with :
a gorgeous leather seat,by Brooks
The amazing Kevlar belt that replaces the greasy chain, which is much better for your trousers,
Nice lightweight aluminium frame,
Weights less than 22 pounds,
Really compact when folded,
The limited edition features larger 18″ Scwhalbe tires for a smoother ride…wow !
